Facebook have rumoured to be entering the mobile phone market for a while now. Google are trying to claw back some ground in the Social Media sphere so it's only natural that Facebook decide to delve into the mobile market and compete against Google and Apple, maybe even Windows phones for market share.
It has been reported that HTC will produce a phone in conjunction with Facebook which will run on Android, interesting seeing a Google/Facebook partnership!! The phone will be integrated with the Facebook social network, not sure this will be a good thing, it depends on whether Android functionality will be limited at all by this integration. According to the Wall Street journal the code name for the phone is "Buffy" and the phone is stiil 12 to 18 months away from appearing anywhere.
The Smartphone market appears to be on the up at the moment, unlike severall other markets. It may, however be saturated by the time this phone arrives. How the market leaders in this field will view a new competitor that already uses their platforms to deliver it's main product may be interesting. A Facebook phone doesn't sound that appealing to me but then a computer named after a piece of fruit probably didn't generate a herd of salivating consumers when it first appeared?
Speaking of markets, the financial kind, this may all be scuppered if Facebook float on the Stock Exchange next year as rumoured and perform like the Groupon IPO!!
